Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) - Vancouver Coastal Health

Provided by Vancouver Coastal Health

Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) refers to a doctor or nurse practitioner helping an eligible person, at the patient's capable, voluntary, and explicit request, to end their life.
The VCH Assisted Dying Program assists adult clients who have a serious and incurable illness, disease, or disability and are experiencing intolerable suffering and wish to explore having a medically assisted death.

The VCH Assisted Dying Program provides support to clients, their families and loved ones and their medical and care team through this process. The Assisted Dying Program assists clients and their care team with accessing and completing the Request for Medical Assistance in Dying form, coordinating MAiD eligibility assessments and coordinating and supporting an assisted death for those who are found eligible and wish to proceed with their assisted death.

The VCH Medical Staff MAiD page has additional information to support medical staff with MAiD requests, including suggested next steps based on the clinicians desired level of involvement in MAiD. The VCH Medical Staff MAiD page can be found here.

The Assisted Dying Program assists patients and their care providers in Vancouver Coastal Health (Richmond, Vancouver, North Shore, Sea to Sky, Sunshine Coast, Powell River, Bella Bella, Bella Coola). You may be eligible for an assisted death if you feel you meet all the criteria below if you:

  • can make your own decisions about your health, and this decision in particular;
  • have a grievous and irremediable medical condition;
  • have been informed of the means that are available to relieve your suffering, including palliative care;
  • are making this request of your own free will and not because of pressure or influence from others.
