Stepping Stones Emergency Shelter: 24/7 emergency shelter that provides hot meals, a warm, dry bed and safety to hundreds of Kootenay residents every year.
Affordable Housing: Safe, comfortable, and affordable housing to low-income seniors, families and single adults. 155 units, at five locations, low-income housing in Nelson. Vacancies are filled based on need. Criteria for affordable housing include Income status, those fleeing violence, at risk of becoming homeless, and family size based on BC Housing guidelines.
The Advocacy Centre: Provides advocacy to individuals as well as workshops and presentations on legal issues. It has long been a voice in the community speaking to issues of poverty and discrimination and focuses on topics such as welfare, family law, tenancy, women’s safety and poverty survival.
Kootenay Seniors: Provides supports that allow seniors to live with dignity and joy, participate in their communities, and remain in their own homes as long as possible. Activities include Home Support Program, Transportation Program, Annual Seniors Fair.
Emergency Shelter: Operates Stepping Stones, a 24/7 emergency shelter when there is nowhere else to turn. The shelter houses up to 17 people, in five bunk-style bedrooms, with a stay of up to 30 days. It is a low-barrier, drug-and-alcohol-free, safe environment. Provides shelter provides hot meals, a warm, dry bed and safety to hundreds of Kootenay residents every year. Serves area from Kaslo to Creston, Nelson to Trail.
Residential Services for Community Living (SCL): Provides support for people with developmental disabilities, and complex health care needs to live fully in the community. Through SCL, the Nelson CARES Society provides individual support and assistance for adults in four homes in Nelson. SCL staff provides support with meals, mobility, and personal care. Through personal service plans, we support residents to be active and engaged in their communities and pursue their interests and hobbies.
Custom Fit Inclusion and Employment Services: Provides outreach, community inclusion, and employment support services to people with developmental disabilities referred through Community Living British Columbia.
